Damascus knife intensive course (3 days)

Damascus knife intensive course (3 days)

In Grebenhain (Vogelsberg), our goal is for you to forge a particularly beautiful Damascus knife, accompanied by our expert guidance.

You will make the Damascus steel yourself during the course by folding and fire welding approx. 300 layers!

In addition, you will learn as much technical knowledge and working techniques as can be taught in such a short time.

You will spend approx. 1 day forging and 2 days grinding, hardening, finishing, and designing the handle.

In a small group of up to 8 participants, you will learn what really matters when forging Damascus steel. You are free to choose the blade shape and design the knife according to your wishes.

Our well-trained course instructors will of course be on hand to offer advice and assistance.

Day 1

We start the course at 9:00 a.m. at the knife forge at Grebenhainer Str. 3, 36355 Grebenhain.

After a short safety briefing, we will design your dream knife together.

Whether you want a chef's knife, meat knife, snack knife for your lederhosen, santoku, hunting knife, or outdoor knife, we will help you create the perfect knife design!

Then we will start making your Damascus steel package.

You will weld different types of steel in the fire to form a solid piece and double the number of layers several times by folding and fire welding.

Depending on your requirements, up to 300 layers can be produced before you forge the Damascus steel to the required knife size on the air hammer.

Once you have finished forging the blade blank, you grind out the contour of the knife with the angle grinder and belt sander.

This concludes day 1 of your knife forging course, and the blade is soft annealed overnight in the furnace.

Of course, the blade is normalized beforehand to ensure the finest possible grain structure.

Day 2

We start again at 9:00 a.m. and continue to shape the knife.

We begin the day with the blade grind, using files and the belt sander.

State-of-the-art belt grinders and tools are available for this step to ensure that your blade looks as perfect as possible!

Once the knife blade has been shaped, we will teach you how to harden and temper it without distortion.

This is followed by the blade finish, where you etch the blade to highlight the pattern in the Damascus steel.

In addition to the free materials included in the course, such as walnut, cherry, mahogany, other woods, horn, and bone materials, a HUGE selection of exclusive handle materials is also available for an additional fee.

For an outstanding masterpiece, tropical hardwood, burl wood, precious wood, stabilized wood, fossilized mammoth ivory, teeth and bones, and much more can be purchased on site for an additional fee.

Once all the individual parts have been prepared and adjusted, the second day of the Damascus knife forging course comes to an end.

Day 3

And again at 9:00 a.m...

Handle design and finalization

We begin the last day of the knife-making course by gluing and pinning all handle materials to the Damascus blades.

Gluing and pinning ensures that there is no gap between the blade and the handle, preventing moisture from penetrating.

Once the glue is dry, shape the handle until it fits perfectly in your hand.

Once all scratches, dents, and waves have been sanded out by hand, the handle is polished and, if necessary, oiled.

Finally, we sharpen your knife to razor sharpness and hope that you will enjoy your homemade Damascus knife for many years to come.

Eine tolle Erfahrung. Vielen Dank!

Macht weiter so! TOP, TOP, TOP vielen Dank!

Damascus knife intensive course (3 days)

Day 1

At 09:00 we begin the course at the knife forge located at Grebenhainer Str. 3, 36355 Grebenhain.

After a short safety briefing, we will design your custom knife together. Whether it’s a chef’s knife, carving knife, utility knife, Santoku, hunting knife, or outdoor knife – we support you in creating the perfect knife design.

We then begin producing your Damascus billet. Different steels are forge-welded in the fire into a solid piece, and the number of layers is repeatedly doubled through folding and forge welding. Up to 300 layers are possible before the Damascus steel is forged out on the power hammer.

After forging the blade blank, you will grind the contour using an angle grinder and belt grinder. The day ends with annealing the blade in the furnace – after prior normalizing to achieve a fine-grained steel structure.

Day 2

Starting again at 09:00, we continue shaping the knife.

The day begins with grinding the blade. Modern belt grinders and tools are available to help you achieve the most perfect blade possible.

After hardening and tempering, the blade finishing process follows. Etching highlights the Damascus pattern and makes the layered steel visually stand out.

In addition to the materials included in the course price such as walnut, cherry, mahogany, other woods, horn, and bone materials, a large selection of exclusive handle materials is available for an additional charge, including tropical hardwoods, burl wood, premium hardwoods, stabilized wood, fossil mammoth ivory, teeth, and bones. By the end of the second day, all parts will be prepared and fitted.

Day 3

All handle materials are glued and pinned to the blades. This ensures that no gap remains between the blade and the handle, preventing moisture from entering. After curing, the handle is shaped until it fits perfectly in your hand. Scratches, dents, and uneven areas are sanded out by hand, then polished and, if necessary, oiled.

Finally, we sharpen your knife to razor sharpness – so that it will bring you enjoyment for many years.
